“Really, it is a museum in open air”!
With the above sentence, one of the historians started his speech after his visit to Tarim town (yemen). This town and its humble people, whose houses are wonderfully and skilfully built from mud not cement, is also hosting and welcomes happily and generously its visitors.
Tarim is one of Hadhrmut famous towns as well as Shibam and Siyon. The historians disagreed about the date of its establishment; some said:(In the fourth century-BC), but others said :(It is established during the Shiba rule of Hadhrmut).
The location of Tarim is in the northeast of Siyon town in Hadhrmut valley. Its population is about (100617). It is also considered one of the conservative muslim towns, and it was a destination to those who want to study Islam from all over the world.
Tarim is known to have about (360) mosques, and this number is very surprising compared to the size of the town. Currently this number is not very accurate, but it is a fair approximation, because some small mosques were combined in one big mosque, while other new mosques were also built along with the spread of several Islamic trends such as sufiah, sunna and salafia.
The mosques are divided into two kinds, the new built mosques are built with a new design that differs from the old ones. The old design depends on primeval materials and the roof rests on big cylindrical pillars with curved shapes around, that also give the mosque so much beauty.
Some mosques has no minaret, but some other have. One unique minaret is Al-muhdhar (also built from mud and with primeval material), the tallest mud minaret in the world which is (175 foot) long and it was built in (1333H). (H is Hijri years, and this date is about 100 years ago). This minaret gave Tarim a special place in the international cultural scene, besides its Islamic cultural standing.
