“Fitna” Movie … a Geert Wilders' Opinion PDF Print E-mail
Jaouad Radouani - AlJazeeraTalk - Morocco
Few years ago, on the 30 September 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published islamophobic and blashpemous cartoons that depicted the Islamic prophet Muhammad (PBUH) offensively. A wave of protests and riots rose at the time in defense of the Muslim religion, and was followed by series of administrative resignations and appologies from the Danish part.
Today, Geert Wilder, a Dutch film producer manged to come out with a 15 minutes movie that depicts Islam the same way Jyllands-Posten cartoonists did. The title of the movie is “Fitna”. It begins with verses from the Koran being recited and ends the same way. Most of the content of the movie is about what we may call Islamic focus on Jihadism. The movie is more like a publicity show rather than a real work of art. It is made of images that were carefully selected from different net sources and archives, and it conveys a sense of incompleteness of its content.
Geert Wilder, with no meaning of humiliation, seems to know nothing about Islam and does not make a difference between ‘Jihadism’ that is talked about in the Koran and what we nowadays witness as ‘Terrorism’ phenomenon.

The movie’s, or Geert Wilder’s, main aim, I consider, is to simply criticise Islam and what he believes to be Islam’s drawbacks, but because of Wilder’s carelessness and plain illiteracy in the domain of Islam he ends up offending Islam as a sacred religion and Muslims as a people. For this we urge Wilder to take a close look at what Islam is in an attempt, at least, even if not concerned, to know something about Islam. The reason behind such urge is that Wilder, in many ways, demonstrates, through the misrepresenting movie which he presents, his false conception of Islam. For, the movie, respectfully, does not in any sense refer to what Islam is or who Mulims really are. Besides, the content of the movie is badly gathered and brought together so as to manifacture a story, no more. For instance, Koranic verses that are recited in the movie stand rootless and selected, they are not quoted in their full context. Images of Imams and children talking about Jihad are caught in the middle, and do not show complete story. In other words, the movie, “Fitna,” lacks rationality and does no more than propagate and sell a false fanatic made-story.

Anyway, Islam in its truth and completeness stands irrepresented neither by “Fitna” movie the likes nor by cartoons that humiliate prophets. Islam, Christianity, Judaism and other religions, are respected sects which Muslims highly value, respect, and do not dare humiliate in base cartoons or misrepresent in fabricated movies. In fact, the Terrorism that Geert Wilder refers to and glues to Islam has nothing to do with real Islam and Muslims. The prophet Muhammed (PBUH) used to live among Jews and Christians in his time, they used to be his next door cousins and constituted part of his tribe. He never offended a Jew or a Christian and gave them full freedom to practice their religions inside the Muslim community. The thing one should know when it comes to Terrorism, especially Geert Wilder, is that Muslims are not terrorists and that a terrorist is not a Muslim although he claims to be so. Moreover, Muslims themselves suffer from terrorism which is refuted by Islam and by Muslims who condemn it daily.

As for Geert Wilder’s movie, we should consider it his own opinion about Islam, and Islam does not condemn those who do not know for their ‘not-meant’ deeds. And since Wilder, surely, does not know what the real Islam is, he remains free to publish his hurting opinions, except the fact that truth is better than made up stories that seek to injure the feelings of others and defame them for nothing. I wish Wilder and the likes do a little research that may lead them to truth before publishing anything; because, since freedom of speech is mainly about WHAT IS not WHAT IS NOT, Christianity itself and true Christian ethics do not allow a true believer to ever humiliate any human being.

Opinion!!!

Right, it is an opinion, the opinion of one on behalf of many! But, though it is offensive, the faith of a real Muslim cannot be moved, Thanks God. On the contrary, the faith of many Christians and Jews can. A good number of them have converted to Islam, but I have heard of no Muslim converting to any other religion. The movie, and so many others, targeted Islam, but Islam is more open than the narrow spot the movie aimed at. The movie has shown the narrow-mindedness and indescribable ignorance of all those who like its content...Thanks Jaouad!
