Ahmad Muaffaq Zaidan - AlJazeera Talk
The indifference of the Muslims vis-à-vis massacre of Palestinians at the hands of gang of Zionist criminals is comprehensible as Muslims, every where from Ghana to Farghana, are preoccupied with nursing their own open wounds. But what is most shocking and unintelligible is that why is the Pakistani media, electronic or print, unmoved and neglectful of the latest highly volatile situation in Gaza, where babies less than five months old were massacred in cold blood.
The constructive role of media is to touch upon the daily affairs of its audience and viewers and advance their cause and interests. The responsible media sets the agenda which suits the basic needs of any country's masses and can also change the course of history. It can minimise sufferings of the people and can play a lead role in identifying and averting disasters.
Every media-man will know that while it is his duty to remain neutral when reporting on any event but that norm means nothing and must be deviated from when the event is directly affecting and may have long-term consequences for the hapless masses. I recall once when immediately after Pakistan's October 8 earthquake I was reporting to Aljazeera from Balakot and after sensing the magnitude of the disaster and sufferings of the affected people, instinctively found myself shouting that I will not be neutral today and I am proud I did that.
A similar case in point is the latest Gaza massacre where, I believe, neutrality has to be set aside. On Thursday evening, finding almost no coverage of the event on Pakistani electronic media, I was only saddened. But when I woke up with great expectations this Friday morning, my shock and grief found no bounds because even the Pakistani print media, did not find the gruesome massacre of 36 innocent Palestinians including nine babies, a big enough story to publish it on their front pages. Alas, not only the Pakistani media seems to be sleeping over the issue but Pakistani politicians and Islamists also seem untouched over it, as if it had happened on a different planet.
We must remember, Palestine is not for Palestinians alone and they didn't raise the infamous motto Palestine first. Who, among the Muslims, can deny the sanctity of Al-Aqsa mosque as the third most sacred place on the face of the earth after the harams of Mecca and Medina. So, Palestine is still a sacred place for Muslims all over the world. Why is it that it failed to attract anyone's attention and especially here in Pakistan, where everyone claims to have so much sympathy for the Palestinians and the Palestinian cause?
Gaza today calls up on every Muslim and every civilized nation to help her out and compel these cruel murderers to put an end to their brutalities. It is a matter of shame for all the civilized societies and self-acclaimed champions of human rights to remain silent on such issues. Why do they dump their principles when it comes to Palestinians? Where do their moralities go when innocent babies, who have just opened their eyes, are killed in cold blood? Would they have done the same had it happened in any European country? Gaza today is burning and drowning in the blood of those innocent babies but there is no saviour in sight and any one who remains tight-lipped is equally a part of this conspiracy.
